PRIVACY NOTICE
Your privacy, in plain language.
This notice explains how Genes at First Sight handles personal information submitted through the website, including the Reader’s Desk.
Who is responsible for your data?
Genes at First Sight, operated by Anastasia R., is responsible for the personal information collected through this website.
What information may be collected?
For Reader’s Desk submissions, you may provide a question or article idea, optional extra details, an optional name and an optional email address. The website may also process limited technical information needed for security, site operation and consent-based analytics.
Why is it used?
Reader’s Desk information is used to receive, review and organise reader questions and editorial ideas, and to reply to you if you choose to provide an email address. Reader’s Desk emails are not added to a marketing or newsletter list.
Lawful basis
The Reader’s Desk is operated on the basis of legitimate interests in communicating with readers, managing editorial suggestions and responding to people who contact Genes at First Sight. Where a different lawful basis is required for a particular use, it will be identified before that use takes place.
Please avoid sensitive information
Please do not submit medical records, detailed identifiable health information, passwords, financial information, or personal information about another person. A general science or health question is enough.
Who can see the information?
Reader’s Desk submissions are intended for the private Genes at First Sight Studio. Information may also be processed by service providers needed to host and operate the website, including Cloudflare, subject to their role as service providers and applicable data-protection obligations.
How long is it kept?
Reader submissions are kept only for as long as reasonably needed to review, respond to, develop or archive the editorial idea. Information that is no longer needed should be deleted or anonymised.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights including access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection and data portability. You can also raise a concern with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
Marketing
Submitting an idea through the Reader’s Desk does not subscribe you to marketing. Any future newsletter or marketing sign-up will be presented separately.
Updates to this notice
This notice may be updated as the website changes. Last updated: 1 October 2026.
